5 Fantasy Series I’d Like to Start but Haven’t Yet

There are many many books that I have on my wishlist but also many that I see daily on Instagram and from my WordPress reader that I have yet to read and don’t always know what they’re about either. I find it super exciting nowadays to start a book without really knowing what it’s about and slowly finding out what’s lurking within its pages. This is why in this little discussion post, I’ll list 5 fantasy series I’d like to start and haven’t yet THAT I don’t actually know what they’re about too well.

Especially in the fantasy genre there are some book series that are super hyped up by my friends and on social media and some are by my favourite authors, some are just series I have seen in bookshops and really want to get. I only own like 2 of the books on this list so the rest I’d obviously have to buy sometime in the future.

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Everybody was on the hype train for the final book of this series earlier this year and I could not relate since I have never picked it up! I honestly wanted to start it at the time but as a design student and forever being all about that aesthetic, I am waiting for all the pretty UK editions to be available in either the same size paperback or the hardback. I just personally can’t stand having book series that don’t match in height. The Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy is like that on my shelves, and it still bothers me.

I don’t know too much about this series at all. I know that there are very diverse characters…possibly knives and deadly action looking at the new US edition covers. Other than that…not super sure. I guess that’s what is going to make it exciting! I had no idea what ACOTAR or Shadow and Bone were about when I was getting back into reading and it was awesome, I want to do more of that. A book can be a blind date even if you know the cover haha

Wintersong by S. Jae Jones

This is another one that people have raved about. I had many friends on Instagram fighting to somehow acquire the arc to its sequel when it came out in the last few months and I’ve seen these books on the shelves in my local bookstore – so it’s waiting for me…

The only thing I know about this one is that there’s a character called Liesl and there’s a certain Goblin King, and I know that purely from the fact that I received some candles with those names inspired by this series.

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

This is a book I definitely, 100% have to start this year. I own TWO copies of it (shoppoholic alert) and haven’t read it yet. I know only some vague world descriptions like how there are multiple Londons or multiple dimensions of London based on colours? Like Red, Black and White possibly? I’m not totally sure but the amount of people that have recommended it to me obviously says something. I feel like I am a little behind in the book community and sometimes like I’m in a race to catch up but I’m trying to go with the flow. Stress just decreases any motivation to read in the first place.

Frostblood by Elly Blake

I own the first two books of this series and I will be reading these books next month! One of my favourite bloggers loves this series and the latest book just came out last week or something so I’ll pick that one up and I might binge read it. From the covers and the titles, I can only deduce that it involved people with magical powers (yes to the yes) and I am so down for that.

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

AH, THIS ONE. I want to watch the movie, I have not yet and I also want to read the series. It sounds super fun and super cute and this is another one that I just need to buy and I’m just picky about books lately cause I have so many to read at home!

I know the basic storyline from the amazing movie trailer – An Asian American couple, girl meets guy’s parents and realises they are SUPER rich, or CRAZY RICH as others have described and her obstacles in meeting the expectations of the rich society and the guy’s family. Can I just say how happy I am that this movie has a full Asian cast? Shoutout to my fellow Asians out there <3

And those are the 5 fantasy series I’d like to start but haven’t yet – with the majority being those that I know hardly anything about. Please excuse my lack of book cover photos next to each book in this blog post, I’d rather be reading than blogging at the moment since I’m moving house this week!! So I’m trying to read as much as I can cause packing takes so much time T_T

Have you read any of these series? Did you enjoy them? & do you like not knowing much about a book before starting to read it?

Until next time,

xx Tracy

I just checked out Wintersong from my library, and I’m pumped to read it! I’ve heard great things, but somehow never had the chance to read it. Also, turns out the newest book of the An Ember in the Ashes is IS NOT the last book. I thought it was when I started reading it, but NOPE. There’s going to be a fourth book. Thanks for another wonderful review 🙂

There’s going to be a fourth book?! Omg they better get their editions in order so I can buy them haha and so glad you picked up wintersong! Let me know how it goes, I’m interested to one day pick it up from the bookstore 😊

  • Lexie

You’re not the only one – I havn’t read A Darker Shade of Magic either despite owning all the books (as you do). I’ve actually just picked it up (finally) and I’m only a hundred pages in but so far I’m liking it but I’m not in love. I’m hoping it’ll pick up soon and I’ll be fully hooked! As for Wintersong… That book is my official arch nemesis. I bought it because for one thing, that cover and because I adore Labyrinth but I just wasn’t feeling the story or characters. I hope you have a much better reading experience than I did! 🙂

Ahhh yes I definitely need to pick up ADSOM, for some reason I feel an urge to buy the second and last book since I only own the second. Like if I love it I’ll want to keep reading the series straight away but I don’t even know if I’ll like it yet?? And oh gosh, I honestly have heard mixed reviews about wintersong, whenever I do pick it up in the future, hopefully I enjoy it a little more. As much as writing roasts and rants are fun, it’s always better to actually enjoy the book youre reading 😅😂😂

Ahaha yes I much prefer reading a book I can fall in love with! 😂 I knew fairly early that it wasn’t for me but I forced myself to keep reading. I have this thing with not DNFing a book but I probably should have. Am I the only one who feels I owe the author and my bank account and see it through till the end??? Probably.

        • Tracy

Yes I’m the same! I basically never DNF, I just get through it even if I have to skim read cause then at least I’m giving the whole book and the author a fair go haha

I’ve read both Crazy Rich Asians and Darker Shade of Magic, I just haven’t finished them yet! I have one book left in CRA and two in ADSOM, hopefully I can finish them this year! I really want to start Scythe though, but I really need to finish some of my unfinished series first before I can start a new one xD

    • Tracy

Oh I know the feeling! I’m hoping to finish a few series I’ve started over the next few months too and you should totally read scythe! It’s a must
